The Best Neighbourhoods in Edmonton to Build a Custom Home

We’ve all driven through an older Edmonton neighborhood, admiring the large lots and tree-lined streets. There’s no denying that these neighbourhoods have a kind of charm that newer neighbourhoods in the city just haven’t achieved yet.

Though living in these neighbourhoods is appealing, it can be difficult to find a home that meets your needs or has that dream home feel. Although many properties in these neighbourhoods are beautiful heritage homes, there are also many that are incredibly outdated and falling apart.

So, what’s the answer to this problem? Build a custom home in your dream neighbourhood! Continue reading as we take a look at some of the best mature neighbourhoods in Edmonton to build your dream home.

1. Westmount

Westmount boomed in 1912 when a large portion of homes were built in the neighbourhood – mostly single-family dwellings according to the Edmonton Historical Board

Today, the Westmount neighborhood has yet to lose its air of classic sophistication and charm. The streets are lined with a mix of heritage and remodeled or restored homes, complete with big backyards and old-growth trees.

Another huge benefit of living in this neighborhood is the close proximity to 124th street, known for boutique shopping and a weekly farmer’s market.

2. Glenora

Glenora is a well-known mature neighbourhood that offers tons of amenities. Overlooking the Edmonton River Valley, this neighbourhood has great access to trails and parks, while also having a wonderful selection of schools, accessible transit, and easy access to the downtown core.

Glenora’s historical streets are home to both new and old homes, with many infill properties popping up in skinnier lots.

3. Rio Terrace

Close to many family-friendly amenities, Rio Terrace is home to an eclectic mix of classic and modern style homes.

Perched on the north bank of the North Saskatchewan River Valley, this neighbourhood is complimented with spectacular views of the River Valley and Fort Edmonton Park that you are sure to fall in love with - maybe even deep enough to build your dream home?

4. Ritchie

Of course, Ritchie was going to be on this best neighbourhood list. How could it not be, given the locally-owned shops found inside this neighbourhood, such as Transcend Coffee, Kind Ice Cream, Little Duchess, and so many more!

The community of Richie has a strong sense of community, with a very engaged community league going out of its way to host concerts, classes, and even a yearly chili cook-off! Check out this resource to see more of the benefits Ritchie has to offer its residents!

5. Parkview

The community of Parkview, as its name suggests, is host to many parks in west Edmonton. This neighbourhood also provides residents beautiful sights of the downtown cityscape due to its elevation.

Parkview is one of Edmonton’s largest residential neighbourhoods and was developed in the mid-1950s, giving it time to mature and evolve. Many homeowners have renovated the older homes in the community, while others have started from scratch and built brand new homes on the community’s large residential lots.

Like Ritchie, Parkview’s community league boasts many sports and social activities for residents to take part in.
